Privacy notice
Two different sets of people appear in this notice: the trades who subscribe to us, and the households whose planning approvals appear in the lists we compile. The second half is the part that matters most, so it comes first.
If you have had planning permission granted and you don't want your property to appear in our lists, email optout@thepatchlist.com with the address or the council's application reference. We will remove it within five working days and keep the address on a suppression list so it does not reappear. You do not have to give a reason and we will not ask for one.
1. Who we are
The Patch List is operated by Mr Kurt Miller, trading as The Patch List. We compile lists of approved planning applications from public planning-register information and supply filtered lists to construction trades on subscription. Mr Kurt Miller is the controller for the processing described here.

We apply the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018 and, where it applies to a particular activity, the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
2. Planning register data
Where it comes from
Local planning authorities publish planning applications and decisions on their public registers. We currently collect relevant fields through UK PlanIt, which aggregates information from those registers, and link each supplied record back to its source. UK PlanIt states that its API may be used within its rate limits and that attribution is not required; we nevertheless identify the source for transparency.
What we hold
For each approved application we hold: the site address and postcode, the authority's own application reference, the description of the proposed work as written by the authority, the decision date, the application type and decision status, and a link back to the authority's record.
We do not collect or supply applicant or occupier names. We do not collect telephone numbers or email addresses for the properties on our lists, and we do not attempt to look them up. A site address can still identify the people who live there, so we treat this information as personal data and apply this notice to it.
Why we process it, and our lawful basis
Our lawful basis is legitimate interests under Schedule 2 Part 1 paragraph 5 of the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018 and, where applicable, Article 6(1)(f) of the UK GDPR. The interests are ours and our subscribers': helping local trades identify publicly approved building work relevant to their services. We have carried out and documented a legitimate interests assessment and will provide a summary on request.
Who we share it with
Each council-and-trade combination is supplied to no more than one active subscribing business once availability has been confirmed. We do not sell, rent or license these lists to data brokers, marketing agencies or the general public.
Subscribers agree to use the information only for their own postal marketing about their own services, not to pass it on, to identify The Patch List as the source in their first communication, and to stop contacting any address that objects.
How long we keep it
Twelve months from the decision date, after which the record is deleted. Suppression records — addresses that have asked not to appear — are kept indefinitely, because that is the only way to honour the request.
Telling people directly
We do not hold the homeowner's name, email address or phone number, so we cannot give individual notice by those channels. We publish this notice and require subscribers to identify The Patch List as the source, direct the recipient to this notice, and explain the right to object in their first postal communication. Where providing separate advance notice to every property would involve disproportionate effort, we rely on the applicable transparency exemption while using data minimisation, short retention, source links and the suppression process above as safeguards.
Your rights
You can ask us for access to what we hold about your property, ask us to correct, erase or restrict it, or object to the processing. You have an absolute right to object to processing for direct marketing. Once we receive an objection, we stop marketing use and keep only the minimum suppression record needed to ensure the address does not reappear. Email optout@thepatchlist.com.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner or, where UK data-protection law applies, the UK Information Commissioner's Office. We would rather you told us first, but you do not have to.
3. Subscribers and enquirers
If you subscribe, request a sample or contact us, we hold your name, business name, email address, phone number if you give it, the council and trade you asked about, and our correspondence with you.

Payments are handled by our payment provider; we never see or store your full card details. We use email and hosting providers, including Cloudflare, who process data on our behalf. We do not sell your details to anyone.
International transfers
Some service providers may process data outside Jersey or the United Kingdom. Where this happens, we require an appropriate legal safeguard, such as an adequacy decision or approved contractual protections.
4. The website
This site sets no advertising cookies. When you submit the availability form, the details you enter are stored in our Cloudflare-hosted database so we can answer your request. Cloudflare also processes standard request information such as IP address, browser/device information, security events and basic performance data to provide hosting, security and service monitoring. We do not use this information for advertising.
The site uses system typefaces and does not load fonts from an external font service.
5. Changes
If we change how any of this works we will update this page and change the date at the top. Material changes to how we handle planning register data will be flagged here for at least three months.
